If you own a Tesla, you may have experienced a problem with your side mirrors not unfolding completely or at all. This can be annoying and potentially dangerous, as it reduces your visibility and increases the risk of collisions.

One of the most common causes of Tesla mirrors not unfolding can be software glitches, mechanical obstruction, autofold option not activated, blown fuse, faulty motor or wiring.

Tesla Mirrors Not Unfolding What You Need to Know

What are the Causes of Tesla Mirrors Not Unfolding and Their Fixes?

There are several factors that can prevent your Tesla mirrors from unfolding properly. Thus, depending on the cause of the problem, there are different ways to fix your Tesla mirrors unfolding problem. Here are some of the common causes and their solutions that you can try:

    1. Software Glitches

Sometimes, the mirror folding mechanism may not work as intended due to a bug in the software that controls it. This can happen after an update or randomly.

Usually, this can be fixed by resetting the mirror settings or rebooting the car’s computer.

    The Fix:

If you encounter Tesla Mirrors unfolding issue because of software glitches, then here are some potential solutions that you can try:

    • Unlock the car and lock again. Sometimes, this simple action may trigger the mirrors to unfold. You can do this using the key fob, the mobile app, or the touchscreen.
    • Rebooting the car may clear any software glitches that may affect the mirrors.

You can do this by holding down both scroll wheels on the steering wheel for about 10 seconds until the screen goes black. Wait for a few minutes until the screen comes back on, and then check if the mirrors are working.

    • If the Mirror is still not unfolding automatically, try manually folding and unfolding exterior mirrors by touching Controls > Fold/Unfold Mirrors.

    2. Mechanical Obstruction

If dirt, ice, or water gets into the gaps between the mirror and the housing, it can interfere with the movement of the mirror and cause it to stick or jam. This can also happen if the metal parts inside the mirror get rusty or corroded over time.

    The Fix:

If you suspect that debris or corrosion is causing your mirrors not to unfold, you should clean and lubricate them regularly.

To do Tesla mirror mechanical obstruction, spray some WD40 silicone spray into the gaps between the mirror and the housing and then wipe off any excess with a cloth. You can also use a hair dryer to melt any ice that may be stuck in there.

To prevent this, you should regularly clean and lubricate your mirrors, especially in cold or humid climates.

    3. The Autofold Option is Not Activated

One of the simplest reasons why your Tesla mirrors are not unfolding is that you have not enabled the auto fold option in your settings. This option allows your mirrors to fold automatically when you lock your car and unfold when you unlock it or start driving.

    The Fix:

To fix the Autofold Tesla Mirrors, check if the Tesla Mirrors auto fold option is activated. Go to “Controls > Quick Controls > Mirrors” on your touchscreen, and make sure that the “Fold” option is turned on.

Additionally, the “Mirror Auto Fold” and “Mirror Auto Tilt” settings can be modified to suit your tastes. For example, you can choose to have your mirrors fold only when you park at home or at work or when you use the Summon feature.

    4. Blown Fuse

If the fuse that powers the mirror motor blows, it will cut off the electricity supply to the mirror and prevent it from unfolding. This can happen due to a short circuit, a power surge, or an overload.

    The Fix:

To fix this, you need to locate the fuse box under the hood of your car and look for the fuse labeled “MIRRORS.” You can use a multimeter or a test light to see if the fuse is working properly.

If it is not, you need to replace it with a new one of the same amperage. You can find the fuse specifications in your owner’s manual or online.

    5. Faulty Motor or Wiring

If the motor that drives the mirror folding mechanism fails or gets damaged, it will not be able to move the mirror at all. Similarly, if the wiring that connects the motor to the car’s computer gets severed or loose, it will interrupt the signal that tells the mirror to unfold.

    The Fix:

If none of the above solutions work, you may have a more serious problem with your motor or wiring. In this case, you should contact Tesla service and schedule an appointment to have them inspected and fixed by a professional.
