Tesla is a brand name in delivering smooth rides and overall a comfortable driving experience. But the Tesla break squeak is that annoying issue that ruins the drive you paid so much for.

Tesla brakes squeak because of regenerative braking, bad condition of the brake pad material, cold weather, and many more.

    Quick View:

    • Tesla brake squeaking is caused by a plethora of reasons from cold weather, dirt accumulation, and loss of traction to brake materials.
    • Brake burnishing, cleaning, and other solutions can fix this issue.
    Why Does Tesla Brake Squeak

Common Causes of Tesla Brakes Squeak (Solutions Added)

Here are some common causes of brakes squeaking in Tesla along with possible solutions:

    1. Brake Dust Buildup

When brake pads wear down, they create dust that can accumulate on the rotors, causing squeaking.

    Solution

    • Mix a mild, high-quality car shampoo with cold or lukewarm water as a cleaning solution. Spray it on the wheels so that it seeps through to soak the brake dust.
    • Let the wheel cleaner settle on the brake dust for a few minutes. This breaks down the dirt and grime.
    • Disposable latex gloves will save your hands when you’re wiping off the spray with a disposable microfiber towel on the brake dust. Don’t scratch the wheels or brake components.

    2. Rusting of Brakes

Water, mud, and dust can collect on the brakes and cause rust and other issues. Rust deteriorates the brakes causing it to squeak.

    Solution

    • Remove the rotors and clean them with a brake cleaner. For example, the CRC Brake Cleaner.
    • Turn the regen to low and brake aggressively for 3-5 seconds. Repeat the process 5-10 times. This can help remove the rust and improve the performance of the brakes.
    • Rusting is always from water not properly draining from the brake components. Consult a professional to address the water drainage problem and prevent further rusting.

    3. Improper Bedding of Pads And Rotors

If the brake pads are not properly bedded in with the rotors when new, it causes squeaking.

    Solution

Although this is a factory issue, you can try pressing and releasing the brake:

    • Gradually accelerate your Tesla to a moderate speed, around 40-50 mph.
    • Gently apply the brakes with moderate pressure (bring your Tesla to a speed of 10-15 mph).
    • Release the brakes and repeat.
    • Avoid coming to a complete stop.
    • Drive cautiously for the next 200 miles. Avoid aggressive braking or high-speed driving.

    4. Regenerative Braking

Squeaking can be a result of regenerative braking. It reduces the use of traditional brakes and can lead to oxidation buildup on the rotors.

    Solution

In this case, the squeaking may be considered normal, and no specific solution is required. However, you can try burnishing the brakes.

Cost of Fixing Tesla Squeaky Brakes

The cost to repair Tesla squeaky brakes depends on various underlying issues of the car. Here are the estimates of how much it will cost to solve this problem:

Repairing noisy brakes might not cost anything more. For instance, if your brakes might stop squeaking after 1,000 miles. It means that the problem resolved itself.

Additionally, regenerative braking can cause squeaks which might not need any special repairs.

DIY brake job: If you are confident working on your Tesla, you might want to undertake a DIY brake job. One

If you are confident working on your Tesla, you can go DIY on the brake job. Spare parts may cost around $650 from TireRack. Additional labor will cost $350. For the same job, Tesla quotes may be $1,800.

The cost will vary based on the service provider and the severity of the problem.

Does Tesla Offer Any Warranty For Brake Noise Issues?

Tesla’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty does not cover general appearance or normal noise and vibration. This, of course, includes Tesla brake squeak, general knocks, creaks, rattles, wind, and road vibration.

Moreover, Tesla does not provide warranty coverage for unexpected car noises unless there’s a malfunctioning part.

It is advised to consult with a Tesla service center or a reputable mechanic if your Tesla’s brakes are consistently squeaking.

What Are the Risks of Tesla Brakes Squeak?

Squeaking brakes can be a sign of worn brake pads or other underlying issues. This leads to longer stopping distances and potentially dangerous situations on the road.

The brake squeaking might come from mechanical issues with the caliper. The caliper holds the brake pads against the rotor to bring the car to a stop.

If left unaddressed, these issues can worsen and potentially lead to brake failure. Ignoring brake squeaking can lead to more significant damage to the brake system. It may cause higher repair costs.

Squeaking brakes can be distracting and affect your focus on the road.

    Frequently Asked Questions [FAQs]
